Figueres: the Dalí Theatre-Museum

The famous theatre-museum of Catalan surrealist Salvador Dalí stands in the small town of Figueres, close to the Spanish-French border and 140 km from Barcelona.

The great hoaxer and master provocateur spent fourteen years working on this monument to himself.

A gift to his hometown

In the early '60s of the last century, the mayor of Figueres, the town where Dalí was born, asked the artist to give the town one of his paintings.

Not a painting, a whole museum

But Salvador didn't do things by halves. Instead of a single work, he created an entire museum.

A theatre reborn by Dalí

The museum was built on the site of the old municipal theatre. The building was destroyed by fire during the Spanish Civil War, but that didn't stop the artist.

Today an endless maze of corridors, staircases, halls and rooms fills the former theatre, and unexpected surprises and mysteries wait around every corner.

Dalí's crypt

This very building holds the crypt where Salvador Dalí is buried, which makes the museum all the more magnetic for travellers.

The visit to the Dalí Theatre-Museum is optional and costs extra: tickets are not included in the tour price. As a rule, everyone goes.
