Timeline

Day 1

Departure and day on the road, there will be short stops along the way with the opportunity to have a snack (at your own expense). In the evening, arrival at the hotels, check-in to the rooms and dinner.

Day 2

the cities of Castro Urdiales, Laredo, and Santander

the cities of Castro Urdiales

We have breakfast at the hotel and go on an excursion to Castro Urdiales, it is located at the foot of Mount San Pelayo, where we can admire the monumental Church of Santa Maria, which is the greatest example of Cantabrian Gothic of the 13th century.

Laredo

Then we go to Laredo, where there is a magnificent white sandy beach 4 kilometers long and a picturesque port (by the way, this is the longest beach on the Atlantic coast of Spain). Beautiful views of the city and the coast open from the observation deck; here you can take wonderful photos as a souvenir.

Lunch at the hotel

We return to the hotel for lunch.

and Santander

In the afternoon we go on an excursion to Santander, accompanied by an official guide. This is a large city - the administrative center of Cantabria, built around a large natural harbor, formed before the Roman Empire.

Beautiful beaches and green areas will delight us with their beauty. We will also see Plaza Mataleñas, Sardinero and La Magdalena, where King Alfonso XIII had his summer residence.

It is noteworthy that in 1941 the city suffered a catastrophic fire, after which the city center was almost completely rebuilt.

Dinner and rest

We return to the hotel, have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.

Day 3

Optional excursion to Picos de Europa, Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana, Potes

The excursion lasts all day with lunch at the restaurant.

Optional excursion to Picos de Europa

First we go to the Picos de Europa National Park, where the highest points of the Cantabrian mountains are located - the amazing nature will not leave anyone indifferent. Also in these mountains are the deepest caves in Spain: Torca del Cerro (−1589 m), Sima de la Cornisa (−1507 m), Torca los Rebecos (−1255 m).

The park has preserved unique species of plants and animals, which is partly why it is included in the UNESCO list and is carefully protected. On the way we will stop in Fuente De, where we can take the cable car to the Del Cable viewpoint (the ascent is at the expense of the client and also depends on weather conditions).

Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana

Then we will go to the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana, where a significant relic of the Christian world is kept - the largest piece of the holy cross.

Potes

In the afternoon we will visit the capital of the Picos de Europa - Potes, where we can see the Tower of Del Infantado - a beautiful medieval monument. We return to the hotel, have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.

Day 4

Santonya, Santillana del Mar, Comillas

Santonya

We have breakfast at the hotel and go on an excursion to Santonya, one of the main fishing ports in the Bay of Biscay. During the excursion, we will walk along the city embankment, visit a factory where anchovies and seafood, famous throughout the country, are preserved (entrance tickets are included), and perhaps we will be able to taste them.

Optionally, we will take a boat trip along the Bay of Santonya - an exciting adventure for lovers of boat trips (tickets not included).

Lunch at the hotel

Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will go on an excursion accompanied by an official guide.

Santillana del Mar

Let's start with a visit to the beautiful city of Santillana del Mar - one of the most beautiful in this province! The old city center has a unique medieval flavor: here we will see many narrow cobblestone streets and ancient estates, built between the 12th and 19th centuries and decorated with relief family coats of arms.

The old town is centered around the monastery of Santa Juliana, which was built in the 13th century, although the first chapel on this site is mentioned back in 890. The city is also home to the remarkable Museum of the Inquisition and Torture (Museo de la Tortura), which displays artifacts used during the Spanish Inquisition.

Comillas

Then we will go to Comillas, where we will see the El Capriccio building, built by Antoni Gaudi commissioned by Masimo Diaz de Cuyano. The building was made in the famous style of the Catalan architect and, by the way, the customer himself was a relative Eusebia Güell, whose famous park is located in Barcelona.

We will also see the majestic Sobrellano Palace and the University of the Jesuit Order - architectural masterpieces worthy of our attention!

Dinner and rest

We return to the hotel, have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.

Day 5

Optional excursion to San Sebastian and Getaria

Optional excursion to San Sebastian

Full day excursion with lunch at a restaurant. In the morning we go to the city of San Sebastian - the pearl of the coast.

There is actually a lot to see in this city; here we will be accompanied by a local guide for half a day and we will learn a lot of interesting things about the Basque Country.

By the way, San Sebastian became the most fashionable and prestigious resort in Spain on the shores of the Bay of Biscay thanks to the wife of Emperor Napoleon III, Eugenie Montijo, who first brought the imperial court to nearby Biarritz. And in the 17th century, San Sebastian was one of the most important ports in Spain.

We will see one of the main attractions - the shell-shaped bay and the beaches on its shore, La Concha. Let's see the Kursaal Congress Palace and visit the old city with Constitution Square.

Then we head to the west coast of Guipuzcoa.

Getaria

After passing through the town of Zarautz, we will arrive at the fishing port of Getaria. Sailor Juan Sebastian Elcano was born here, a member of Magellan's expedition who, after his death, managed to bring the only surviving ship of the flotilla to Spain, thus completing the first trip around the world.

The famous fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga also comes from Getaria. A busy but very interesting excursion day!

Dinner and rest

We return to the hotel, have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.

Day 6

Bilbao

We have breakfast at the hotel and head to the port city surrounded by mountains - Bilbao, where we are accompanied by a local guide. It is a modern metropolis with skyscrapers and the unofficial capital of the autonomous community of the Basque Country.

The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, brought him great fame. The opening of the museum in 1997 caused great excitement.

The most famous works of modern art are stored here, but the attention of tourists is most often attracted by the original curves of the building itself, lined with sheets of titanium. We will look at the museum from the outside and also see the amazing 16th century Basilica of Begoña.

In Bilbao, the historical city center, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Doña Casilda Iturriza Park, and the Maritimo de Bilbao Museum (which houses an impressive collection dedicated to the history of the port and shipping) are also worth visiting.

Free time

We will have free time in the afternoon to enjoy the ancient streets of Bilbao and visit something interesting. You can also visit one of the local restaurants and try Basque cuisine, such as pintxos (lunch at your own expense).

We return to the hotel, have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.

Day 7
